Carving out time for yourself and your mind is essential but unfortunately also rather difficult in our modern hyper-connected and hectic world which is filled with constant noise, screens and (digital) distractions. I’m no exception to this rule so in today’s blogpost I want to tell you something about one of my favorite ways to unplug, recharge and reconnect with myself: going on a silent walk.
What is silent walking?
Silent walking simply means that you intentionally put your phone and headphones away while you’re walking on your own. So no podcasts, no music, no messages and no phone calls to keep you company – just the sounds of nature, traffic and your own footsteps and thoughts.
What’s in it for me?
Silent walking can change a potentially chaotic or mindless trot into a mindful exercise:
When you’re not listening to any media or talking on the phone to friends or family, you’re one step closer to connecting with your body, relaxing your mind and letting your thoughts flow as you move.
By removing distractions while walking, you become more aware of your inner and outer environment.
Silent walking allows your brain and body to focus on the present moment.
Easier said than done
The idea of walking without distractions may sound appealing but it’s often easier said than done – especially given the fact that we live in an overstimulating world that bombards us with constant noise and information. That’s why it’s best to keep things simple when you’re new to silent walking:
Choose a nearby calm and quiet area where you feel comfortable (preferably in nature such as a park, a quiet pathway, a trail through the woods or along the shoreline – or even your garden or a peaceful place within your house)
Pick a time when you know there will be minimal people or activity around to distract you.
Don’t forget to eat and drink beforehand otherwise hunger and thirst may become a distraction.
Wear comfortable clothes and shoes that allow you to move freely.
Make sure it’s just you and your thoughts so no phone and no head/earphones but also no walking buddy or dog to keep you company during your walk.
Begin at a slow pace and feel the contact of your feet with the ground. Pay close attention to the sensation of walking. Notice the movement of your feet and legs, the swing of your arms and the rhythm of your breath.
Focus on your feelings, breathing and the surrounding beauty: be mindful of each breath and each step, listen to the sounds of nature around you, feel gratitude for the sun kissing your skin and use the time for reflection.
Start with short sessions of 10 to 15 minutes and gradually increase the duration.
Have you tried silent walking?
